You’re Not Alone
Did you know that depression is one of the most common life experiences?
Depression is a painful experience, usually one of hopelessness, loneliness and feelings of inadequacy or insecurity. It can impact every aspect of your life: relationships, ability to socialize, to work, to sleep, to make healthy lifestyle choices, even to get out of bed in the morning. It’s difficult for someone who has never experienced the pain of depression to understand how devastating and overwhelming it can be.
The good news is that much research over recent decades shows that counselling can help. And now, studies have found online counselling to be as effective as traditional face-to-face. One interesting study on depression even found that the online counselling participants experienced “more long term efficacy, indicated by continued symptom reduction three months after treatment” while those in face-to-face counselling did not. (Click here to read more about research on the efficacy of online counselling for many issues, including depression, anxiety, grief, and a variety of health conditions). Whether in-person or online, counselling can help provide relief from the pain of depression – and often with longer term benefits than medication.
I believe that people are the experts on their own lives. And, while I may have suggestions, resources or information to share with you, I always want you to feel in control of how we spend our time together. I value your opinions about what works for you and see my role as your support when you need it most; a compassionate, non-judgemental ear to bear witness to your story, your experiences, your dreams, your desires; I am your partner in working towards the change you want in your life. Through the process of reflecting, receiving support and feedback, and gaining new skills, online counselling is a private and convenient resource to help you heal from the pain of depression, so you can begin living a fulfilling life.
Did you know that Resolving Insomnia can sometimes heal depression too?
Improving sleep with CBT-I often helps relieve depression and some people find they are able to reduce or stop their anti-depressants as well. In fact, some people taking anti-depressants for years may not have needed them in the first place had they been able to resolve their insomnia first. This is because insomnia can cause depression, as many people know. [*But please do NOT stop taking your medication without consulting your doctor as it can be dangerous and you may end up with severe withdrawal symptoms]. Contact me for more info or help with insomnia.
Please note that while the benefits of online counselling make it a perfect fit for many people, it is not suitable for everyone. For example, if you are feeling suicidal or experiencing severe depression, you would be better served by face-to-face counselling or other crisis resources.
